Red Hot Chili Peppers iPod

Continuing the use of the iPod to revive once great bands, Apple is launching a new version around the Chili Peppers' new album. This one can't be bought (yet), you have to download the album and then be entered into a drawing to win.

Somehow I think this is an insight into Steve's music tastes more than anything else. Tastes formed during the 80s.

yeah, but while Chili Peppers and U2, on the surface, don't come off as the ultimate in "hip", Steve is tryna move millions of those units. and Gen Y still don't have the bucks to buy a $300 unit without begging Gen X moms+dads who will not go for an extra-pricey special-edition Justin Timberlake iPod.

yet plenty of us Gen X'ers have finally got the jobs that gives us the dough to go buy OURSELVES a shiny U2 and Chili Pepper iPod treat.

further, Apple is busy tryna move mass libraries of iTunes, not just a single here and a single there...and younger, hipper entrants just don't have the product breadth, nor shown the longevity to even become a fanchise library like a madonna or rolling stones. the christina aguilera collection iPod, in theory sounds hip and hot and now...but that would be a disappointing 3 albums (including the xmas carols album) and a bunch of cheap-ass kids not really forking over the dollars to get it.

music labels and retailers would rather sell more jimi hendrix, pet shop boys, nirvana, and beach boys libraries than justin timberlake anyday - less residuals, nothing to repackage, universal recongnition, it is just evergreen and easy money.

this is a smart move for iPod.
